Frequent Question & Answers

Q.   How do I start transitioning from my relaxed hair?

A. This answer will vary depending on the hair texture, type and your personal skill level set.  There  are many options such as,  continuing the smoothing  process, Braids with extensions, Straw Sets, Twist Outs, Bantu Knot Outs... A whole host of options are available depending on where you are as a soul and what you are willing to risk to try something new!

Q.   Is there a way to transition without damaging my hair or causing breakage?

A.   Yes,  there are quite a few ways to transition without breakage... if you are willing to be involved in the health of your hair at home...
1.) Take some instructional classes @ a local salon make sure you have the correct technique and skill level to manage your hair's most basic needs at home!  2.)  Ask your Natural Hair Stylist about Weekly Package options that will enable you to come weekly for treatment and up keep at an affordable price...
3.)  Be willing to invest in yourself and the health of your hair as well as your personal health.
4.) Try more carefree styles that will allow you to leave your hair styled for a 1 -2 weeks or a month at a time, this will help the time go by faster and you will begin to see the growth pattern.

Q.  It has been 2 or 3 months since my last relaxer touch -up HELP! What is the next step for me?

A.   The next step for you is learning to care for 2 types or patterns of hair. The Straightened and The Curly... Here are two options and styles that I suggest to my clients, Straw Setting the hair which makes it all one curl pattern, Flat Twist Set  or Straw Set Twist Out.  I also will suggest depending on the client to get a Henna Conditioning Treatment and continue to Heat Smooth their hair.

Q.  I want to start locs - but I still have relaxed ends... is the BC (big chop) my only option?

A.  No, the BC is not your only option you have when starting to loc your hair... Locs can be started in various ways, even on relaxed hair, a Healthy Hair Consultation  would certainly give you all the available options for you and your individual needs.

Q.  How often can I shampoo during the first  few months of starting my locs?

A.   Shampooing or cleansing the hair and scalp is an essential part of healthy hair hygiene, so each persons regimen will vary.  Check with your stylist she may suggest you come in weekly or bi-weekly, some even suggest 1 time per month.  I generally suggest bi-weekly cleansing to keep the hair fresh, clean and free from lint and debris.

Q.  My Hair is all natural and I would like to wear it straight, will straightening my hair damage it ?

A.   Straightening/stretching curly hair out to make it flat can be done with the proper techniques and tools.  You can create healthy hair no matter what style you choose to wear with the best products, tools and technique and skill level.  Otherwise you could be creating damage from stress or heat.  Protein treatments, Henna treatments or deep moisture treatments are just a few ideas for keeping natural hair healthy while heat styling.

Q.  How long will 2 Strand Twists last on my hair?

A.   2-Strand Twist generally will last 2-3 weeks on most hair, for some hair 4 weeks if shampooed in between re-twisting services.  You can create a different look from the same style after cleansing the hair and scalp, then moisturize and oil the hair allow to air dry or set under dryer untwist and wear in a twist out.

Q.  What Products should I use now that I'm all natural?

A.  My philosophy on natural hair and products are as such... if you can not pronounce the words in the ingredients then you probably would not eat the ingredients therefore purchasing and using products that are not digestible are not the best choice for a well balanced lifestyle nor healthy hair and skin.  100% Natural ingredients is the choice preferred by top Natural Hair Care Culturists.
