HEALTHY HAIR SALON ™

HAIR TEXTURE DESCRIPTIONS

Most people think of hair in terms of being thick or
fine, and curly or straight. There are several considerations when analyzing
hair: texture, density, wave/curl pattern, elasticity, and porosity. Each of
these elements combined gives us endless variety
in hair types and textures.

Hair texture is
the measure of the circumference of the hair strand itself. Classifying the texture of hair as being
"coarse", "fine", or "medium" implies that an individual
strand of hair’s measurement is very small (fine) to very large (coarse).
Medium texture indicates a
middle-range of the size of the hair shaft; it's considered normal or average. Coarse hair is stronger, for obvious
reasons - it has more substance, and can be resistant to hair coloring
services, and straightening. Fine hair, conversely, is often very easy to
process, and can be over-processed easily and is very susceptible to damage
from chemical services.

       Hair texture varies from individual
to individual, and can be different in separate areas of the same head. You may
have coarse hair on the top of the
head and fine hair at the nape of
the neck. Race and ethnicity are irrelevant in determining hair texture, as coarse, medium and fine hair can
be found among all racial and ethnic groups.

Hair
Density

       Hair
density is the total amount of hair
strands on the head. It is usually measured by counting the number of hair
strands in one square inch (2.5cm) of scalp. When a Professional Stylist
informs you that you have thick hair that means it is high density they are
describing. General classifications of hair
density are thin, medium, and thick, and are unrelated to the texture of the hair. On average a head has approximately 2,200 strands of hair per square inch,
and a total of approximately 100,000
hairs.
The main consideration of hair
density is in styling. Thick hair is
very well suited to layered styles,
while thin hair is usually better
suited to more blunt even length styles.
Individuals with thin hair should
consider styles which add curl or enhance their natural curls this gives
an illusion of more hair or fuller hair.

Hair Porosity

Porosity is the hair's ability to absorb moisture and the unit of
measure. Analyzing the condition of the hair's cuticle layer allows us to
determine the measure porosity. This is
rated as low, normal, and high. In
normal, healthy hair, the cuticle is compact and inhibits the penetration of
the hair shaft by moisture - both moisture going in, and moisture coming out.
When the cuticle is overly compact and prevents the penetration of the hair by
moisture it has low porosity. Hair with low
porosity is harder to condition and give treatments, and is resistant to
hair color and perms. High porosity hair
is hair whose cuticle layer is open and the hair absorbs moisture too-readily. Overly-porous
hair also releases moisture easily and becomes dry and is easily damaged. PH -balanced
conditioning treatments are used to contract the cuticle layer and lock-in
moisture on overly-porous hair.
Hair color will take much more quickly and strongly in overly porous hair
(semi-permanent hair colors will fade more quickly). To determine the porosity
of your hair, simply feel it - both while wet and dry. If your hair feels
straw-like and rough when dry, and /or if it feels gummy or slightly rubbery
when wet, then you may have overly porous hair.

Hair Elasticity

The elasticity of hair is the measure of
how much/far the hair will stretch (and return to a normal state). Healthy
hair, when wet, will stretch up to 50% of its original length and return
to its normal shape without breaking, while dry hair will only stretch about 20%. Elasticity is described as being low, normal, or high. Hair's elasticity comes from the
side bonds in the hair shaft. Hair with normal
- high elasticity is easily styled
with wet-roller sets, thermal styling tools, etc., while hair that has low elasticity may prove hard to curl, or lose its curl very quickly.
When testing the elasticity of the hair,
be sure the hair is wet, select strands of hair from four different areas on
the head. Hold the strand securely and stretch the hair. If the hair stretches
and returns to its original length when released, then it has good elasticity.
If the hair breaks or doesn't return to its former shape, you have low
elasticity. Hair with low elasticity
is highly susceptible to breakage, and will be hard to curl.

    Courtesy

of hair is different from the other elements in the hair analysis, the reason
being is it’s, classifications have no
reference to the health or well being of the hair. All of the curl pattern
types are found in healthy hair. The classifications for curl patterns are straight, wavy, curly, and coiled.
Hair with absolutely no curl in its length is straight hair. Straight hair can
be coarse, normal or fine.

Wavy-curly
hair has wave to it. A wavy-curly
hair strand will form a distinct 'C' shape when short and an 'S' when longer.

Curly-Very Curly hair will make an 'S'
when short and a repetitive wave when allowed to grow out. Very curly hair tends to be 'woolly' and full when worn long.

Coiled hair strands do just that - they
coil in a spiral as they grow out from the scalp they make an ‘O’ shape. The
coils can be very tiny and give a tight
circular look to the hair (like circles), they range from tiny nail or screw-sized, to medium finger-sized
ringlets.

Courtesy of: NATURALLY HEALTHY HAIR SALON. ™ - WWW.NATURALLYHEALTHYHAIR.COM

2. rt. word hale = wholeness – being sound or well.

Health is a state of complete physical, mental and
social well being and not merely the absence of disease. – WORLD HEALTH
ORGANIZATION 1948

WHAT IS HAIR? – 1. Any of the fine threadlike
strands growing from the skin/scalp of mammals and other animals.

HAIR has no nerve endings therefore it is classified
as non-living.

HAIR roots in fact are living and being nourished by
the bloodstream.

With the onset of the “Natural Hair” and “Healthy
Hair” explosion many people are looking for the right regimen to manage their
new found hair…

Today we will examine the real facts about
wellness/health of our hair.

As we view the health of our hair we must also
consider our body’s overall health and wellness.

The strength, vibrancy of color and natural luster
of our hair is determined by the health or

dis-eased state of the blood and the ph balance of
our body.

Drinking plenty of pure clean water daily (about a
gallon) is a great way to ensure the moisture

Of your hair and skin. The average person eating
plenty of high water content fruits and vegetables can also assist in
maintaining a healthy ph balance and help un-clog sluggish circulation.

Exercising 30 - 45 min. daily to release toxins through
the skin would be a great addition to help achieve healthy hair this also
increases the flow of blood which creates vibrant circulation.

Our hair texture, density and curl patterns are
transferred to us through genetics, each of us has our own unique hair code.

Vital Health and maintenance of the body are our
dutiful responsibilities.

The porosity is also a big factor in managing Healthy
Hair if your hair seems truly thirsty and dry all the time… you probably have high
porosity - (the ability of the hair to absorb liquids).

When the hair is dry, brittle and/or frizzy it is
more than likely in the high porosity zone.

High porosity
means the hair strand is damaged. Apple
cider vinegar rinses (1/4 cup acv 2 cups water)
can aid in balancing the ph of the hair strands and also helps tame tangled
ends.

Trimming the ends of our hair regularly (esp.
curly hair) is another great way to manage over porous damaged
ends.

Muslimah’s

TRUTH ABOUT HEALTHY HAIR

WHAT IS THE TRUTH? –

1. The quality of being
true.

2. The real facts about a person,
situation or event.

WHAT IS HEALTH? – 1. The state of being free from
illness or injury.

2. rt. word hale = wholeness – being sound or well.

Hair” explosion many people are looking for the right regimen to manage their
new found textured hair…

Today we will examine the real facts about
wellness/health of our hair.

As we view the health of our hair we must also
consider our body’s overall health and wellness.

The strength, vibrancy of color and natural luster
of our hair is determined by the health or

dis-eased state of the blood and the ph balance of
our body.

Drinking plenty of pure clean water daily (about a
gallon) is a great way to ensure the moisture

Of your hair
and skin. The average person eating plenty of high water content fruits and
vegetables can also assist in maintaining a healthy ph and un-sluggish
circulation.

Exercising 30 min. daily to release toxins through
the skin would be a great addition to help achieve healthy hair this also
promotes vibrant circulation. Our hair texture, density and curl patterns are
transferred to us through genetics, each of us has our own unique hair code.

Vital Health and maintenance of the body are our
dutiful responsibilities.

Porosity is also a big factor in managing Healthy
Hair if your hair seems truly thirsty all the time… you probably have high
porosity - (the ability of the hair to absorb liquids).

When the hair is dry, brittle and/or frizzy it is
more than likely in the high porosity zone.

High porosity
means the hair strand is damaged. Apple
cider vinegar rinses (1/4 cup acv 2 cups water)
can aid in balancing the ph of the hair strands and also helps tame tangled
ends.

Trimming the ends of our hair (esp.
curly hair) is another great way to manage over porous damaged
ends.

Courtesy of: Naturally Healthy Hair Salon

                                      &

                              Muslimah N.
